Dear Siblings, Sisters, and Brothers of St Peter’s Lutheran Church:
I believe that I have spoken to all of you before about the need for Sabbath, time for reflection in the presence of God who loves us all, and the need to take a break from things when one’s spiritual cup is approaching empty. That is the position in which I find myself now. At the council meeting on 1/13/2022, I asked the council to approve for me to take two week’s vacation followed by two weeks Continuing Education, beginning immediately, 1/14/2022. The council graciously and lovingly approved my request. I did not ask for this bit of grace lightly, and without significant thought, prayer, and advice of my spiritual mentors. I believe this is the best path and is needed to discern how God is leading me. During the next four weeks, I will be unavailable for pastoral functions, and this congregation will be in the capable hands of Vicar Nathaniel. The Scriptural witness is replete with images of ‘wilderness’ and ‘desert’ that afflicted the people of the Biblical record. The people of the Bible endured these trials with varying degrees of success. Regardless, they were difficult times during which they struggled with each other, and with their God who loves them. The last six to eight months have been a struggle for me spiritually. If you recall, in roughly September of last year was the time that I initially broached the topic of taking a three-month sabbatical in late summer, early fall 2022. I have served this congregation going on eight years now. I believe that I have served faithfully, and with the best interests of this congregation at the top of my heart. But now I must take a significant break from day-to-day worship and pastoral activities. I know when I need to refresh and renew my energy and spiritual focus, and that time is now. I ask for your prayers as I enter into this time of rest, reflection, and emotional renewal. Blessings to you always, and God’s Peace to us all Pastor Don <><
